HRM Freshman 101 is here to give you all the basic information that may help you as you start your first year in college.
We have basically divided all the information we gathered into three important headings for you to easily remember them: 1 - Your Community, 2 - Your Home, 3 - Your Family. :) |
The University of Santo TomasTHE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS IS THE OLDEST EXISTING UNIVERSITY in Asia. In terms of student population, it is the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus. The institution was established through the initiative of Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila. On July 24, 1605, he bequeathed the amount of P1,500 and his personal library for the establishment of a “seminary-college” to prepare young men for the priesthood. Those funds, and his personal library, became the nucleus for the start of UST and its library.
The founding of the University of Santo Tomas followed on April 28, 1611, in Intramuros, the Walled City of Manila. UST was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, and later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas, in memory of the foremost Dominican Theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas. In 1785 in recognition of the role of the students and faculty in resisting the British, King Charles III conferred the title of “loyal” to the university and formally granted it the status of a “royal” university. On September 17, 1902, Pope Leo XIII made the University of Santo Tomas a “Pontifical University”, and by 1947, Pope Pius XII bestowed upon it the title of “The Catholic University of the Philippines”. Hence, the complete name of the university, The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, the Catholic University of the Philippines. |
The College of Tourism and Hospitality ManagementThe College of Tourism and Hospitality Management is the youngest college in the University of Santo Tomas. Both the Department of Tourism and Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management was originally under the College of Education. The idea of forming an Institute was conceived by the Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) Department during the late 1990s with the strong support and unwavering efforts of the College of Education. The need for establishing an Institute was realized by the two departments because of the fast-paced changes and growth of the industry that greatly influenced the tourism and hospitality education.
On April 28, 2006, the Tourism and HRM Department of the University of Santo Tomas, was formally institutionalized by the then Rector, Fr. Tamerlane R. Lana, O.P. The elevation of the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (ITHM) to a collegiate status was approved by the Council of Regents dated November 19, 2008 and the Academic Senate by December 16, 2008. After which, on March 12, 2009, the formal launching of the new academic unit of the University was held. The college now offers both degrees: Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management and Bachelor of Science in Travel Management. |
Albertus Magnus BuildingThe Albertus Magnus Building houses 3 different colleges and the Education High School. The 3 colleges sharing the same building are: the Conservatory of Music, the College of Education, and of course, our very own College of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The floor plans above show you the different areas in the building, take note of the location of the Equipment Room! This is where you borrow the podium key and the remote control of the LCD projector in your classrooms.

Hotel and Restaurant ManagementThe Hotel and Restaurant Management curriculum provides a synthesis of different skills, concepts and principles specializing in hospitality training. It involves the study and application of practical and managerial knowledge and functions such as hotel and restaurant operations, culinary arts, food service, hospitality education and research that are essential in preparing the students to become adept future restaurateurs and hoteliers.
So contrary to popular belief, in HRM, yes we COOK, but we are way MORE THAN THAT. We manage, we plan, we sell, we travel, we serve, we assist, we speak up, we give smiles and most importantly, we celebrate our passion. With 6-12 hours of laboratory class per week on one hand and other major and minor subjects on the other, taking up this program is definitely not a walk in the park. It will get not just mentally, but also physically exhausting at times so it is important that you always give a premium on your health! |
The CTHM Uniform
CTHM takes pride in having one of the most notable uniforms in the university. It was patterned after the uniforms used in the hospitality and tourism industry to instill a sense of professionalism among the students even while still in college.
So make sure you always wear your uniform properly and with pride. Also, never forget that your uniform is not complete without your smile! For male students:
For female students:

HRM Uniforms
Aside from the regular college uniform, HRM students also have a number of other uniforms required to be worn in their other major subjects. Why the need for so many uniforms? Well, the different sub-industries of the hospitality industry also requires the need for us to wear the right attire, necessary for the proper accomplishment of the tasks in that field. We probably have the most number of uniforms in the university. So it would be good if you could start saving up for these uniforms which will become available by the end of the semester preceding the semester you will be needing them. Your HRM Society will keep you updated about the availability of such.
The Recipe for SuccessThe hospitality industry is indeed a fast-changing, ever growing industry and UST-CTHM aims to develop you to become future professionals who are competitive enough to meet the demands of that industry.
Aside from providing you a synthesis of different skills, concepts and principles specializing in hospitality training, CTHM-HRM department also provides you opportunities for learning outside the four corners of your classroom. Educational trips and industry exposures such as Bar Tour, Domestic and International Tours, Hotel/Sanitation Tours equips you with the experiences you need to help you further understand as well as apply the theories and concepts you learned in your different courses. The Hotel and Restaurant Management SocietyThe Hotel and Restaurant Management Society is the official organization of Hotel and Restaurant Management majors of the University of Santo Tomas based in the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management. As an academic organization, we organize seminars and activities designed to complement the competencies gained by our members in their different courses.
We also encourage and support our members to participate in national culinary and foodservice competitions aimed at developing their skills and talents. The UST CTHM HRM has been engaged in various interschool and national competitions and our members never fail to bring pride and honor to our college. In view of our vision of developing compassionate future hospitality practitioners, we also organize community development activities which aim to provide varied opportunities for self-advancement to our less fortunate brothers and sisters from our partner communities by sharing to them the skills we acquire from our program. As part of the celebration of our annual HRM Week, the organization takes pride in its flagship project dubbed as the “Student Chefs On the Run (SCOR)”, which is a competition among its members that seeks to showcase their flair and creativity. It features culinary contests as well as skills competition that is sure to test the participants’ ingenuity. Click HERE to know more about us. |

All work and no play is boringBut of course, all work and no play is boring. So we don't just work and organize events round the clock. We also try to have teambuilding and simple bonding activities that aims to promote the unity and teamwork of the group as we believe in HRMS that the success of all the projects and programs that we will be organizing will stem from the strength of our bond as a family.
In the words of Mr. Edbert Jay Armocilla, current President of the Hotel and Restaurant Management Society, "Hindi magiging madali. Pero magiging masaya." (referring to the responsibilities ahead as they face the challenges of Academic Year 2013-2014). Indeed, being part of an organization has its own benefits: you gain new friends, you form a new family, you find your niche in the vast world of college and most importantly, you learn and experience things your regular discussions in class can never provide. Just always remember that you are in school, first and foremost to be a student. So prioritizing an org responsibility (regardless of whatever organization you decide to be part of) over your academic requirements is a NO-NO. HRMS CommitteesHRMS has 9 committees, each having it's specific function, headed by a Committee head and an Assistant head.
